Still in catch-up

January 10, 2008

Just to finish off how I’m handling the break-in program… I’m doing it three times a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  The book says to do it twice a week, but you can do more if you want.  I’ve been doing weight training three times a week pretty regularly (excluding that holiday break), so I wanted to stay on the same schedule.  All I have to make sure of in the break-in phase is that I alternate between workouts (A and B) and that I do the same number of workouts for each.

So yesterday was workout A; tomorrow, workout B.  My legs aren’t sore at all today.  I do feel a little bit of soreness on the outside of my pecs, but not much.  Like I said, I know I’m working to push myself, but I’m not too sore anymore.  I’m going to assume (hope?) that my muscles are just adjusting quickly.

Break-In

January 10, 2008

Ok.  I’m sort of in catch up mode.  I didn’t think about keeping a log of my workout in a blog format until after I started the workout, but no worries:  I still remember exactly what my first workout felt like.

Bottom line, that first workout was hard.  I literally felt like I was going to pass out, and I didn’t even finish the workout.  I did the squats, the next superset (lunges/one-arm row), and that was it.  I had to find a place to sit down, breathe and try to recuperate.  I was starting to get tunnel vision.  Man, it was hard.  I don’t know if it was because I was off for six weeks; did I not breathe correctly;  did I push too hard?   I don’t know, but when I was finally able to regain my composure, I walked out of the gym and my legs were like jelly.  I could barely control them.  The next day I was REALLY sore.

Cut to now.  I’m exactly halfway through the Break-In phase (it’s a three-week phase and I’m one-and-a-half weeks in).  I barely notice any soreness.  I have to look for the soreness in order to find it.   Did my muscles adjust that quickly?  I push myself to the point where I can barely push out the 15th rep, so I know I’m working to exhaustion, but when I walk out of the gym I actually feel energized – unlike the first day.
